After Dental Implants

Diagram of dental implants placed in Las Vegas, NV.After receiving your new dental implants, you need to make sure you follow the aftercare instructions carefully. We worked hard to give you a smile that you are going to have fun showing off to the world, but it needs time to heal. You need to take it easy during that process, and follow each instruction carefully. If you have any questions at all, give us a call here at Canyon Oral & Facial Surgery and let us help guide you.

Caring for Your Mouth After Dental Implant Surgery

The day of your surgery, you want to avoid touching the wounds entirely. Don't push on them, touch them with your tongue, spit, or even rinse your mouth during the first 24 hours. Expect the metal abutment to protrude through your gum tissue while healing.

You should expect a bit of bleeding at first, but that should decrease or stop after about 24 hours. If your mouth is rapidly filling with blood, bite down gently on a bit of gauze for about 30 minutes. If that doesn't stop the bleeding, give us a call so we can take a look.

Swelling is considered normal following dental implant surgery. You can use an ice pack, or even a plastic baggie and towel with ice inside, to help keep the swelling down. It should be applied to the cheek where you had surgery, and stay there as much of the first 36 hours as possible.

You will want to drink plenty of fluids following surgery. Don't drink hot beverages or eat hot foods. The day you have surgery, eat only soft foods, but return to your normal, healthy diet as quickly as you feel up to it following your surgery, unless one of our oral surgeons tells you otherwise.

Dealing with Pain After Dental Implant Surgery

For the most part, you are going to be able to manage your pain with over-the-counter medications. You will want to follow what our oral surgeons tell you over what we say here, as this is just a guideline.

As soon as you start feeling that your anesthetic is wearing off, take your first dose. Adults using Tylenol (regular or extra-strength), take 1-2 capsules every 3-4 hours. Adults using ibuprofen will want to take 2-3 capsules every 4-6 hours, but don't go over 3200mg in any 24 hour period. If you are younger than 18, speak with our oral surgeons on your max doses of medications.

If your pain is severe, use the prescribed pain medications you were given. If you happen to be allergic to any of these medications, do not take them. If you were told not to take them for any reason, do not take them. Avoid alcohol, driving, and using any type of machinery. Pain should decrease daily after surgery. If it doesn't, call us so we can check on how your mouth is healing.

You will want to make sure you take all antibiotics as prescribed, until the entire bottle is gone.

Oral Hygiene Routines

For successful implants, you need to make sure to keep your mouth healthy. The first night following surgery, be sure to use the Peridex Oral Rinse you were prescribed. The day after surgery, begin rinsing once after breakfast and once before bed with the rinse. This rinse needs to be at least 30 seconds long, then spit out when done. Rinsing with warm salt water 4-5 times a day should begin that day, too. This can be made using one cup of warm water and one teaspoon salt. Gently brush your teeth and abutments starting the day after surgery, making sure to clean the surgical areas lightly.

Physical activity needs to be kept down after surgery, as it can increase your blood pressure and restart your bleeding. You should also not wear any type of denture (full or partial), or flipper, for the ten days following surgery, as we explained prior to your dental implant surgery.

Give us a call if you are experiencing pain or have any questions about the implant healing process.
