Sinus Lift
Las Vegas, NV

A sinus lift maybe required to get dental implantsGetting a sinus lift is necessary for some people prior to getting dental implants. Are you one of those people? If you are considering dental implants, this is a question you need to know the answer to. Prior to getting implants, steps need to be taken to ensure there is enough bone in the jaw to support the abutment, and the subsequent implants, which is why we perform sinus lifts for those who need them but don’t have enough bone in place. To find out if you may need a sinus lift prior to getting your dental implants, schedule a time to come in and see us here at Canyon Oral & Facial Surgery.

What a Sinus Lift Entails

Behind your cheeks and above your top teeth is your maxillary sinuses. They are air-filled, but otherwise empty spaces. Sometimes, the roots of your upper teeth extend into these sinuses. When you have upper teeth removed, it often leaves you with only a thin layer of bone between the mouth and maxillary sinuses. However, when you get dental implants, they require solid bone to support and anchor them. If this wall is thin, it can make dental implants an impossibility.

Sinus lift in Las Vegas, NV.If you want implants that are going to last a long time, you need both good quality bone, and a good quantity of bone to anchor the implants in place. When bone loss occurs from injury or after periodontal disease, you can have a sinus lift performed to raise up the floor of the maxillary sinuses. This difference in height allows new bone to form, and gives you a better quality of bone to use to support your implants.

This common bone grafting procedure allows patients to overcome bone loss in or above their top jaw. It seeks to allow new bone growth within the floor of your maxillary sinuses. However, the growth remains over the bony ridge from your gums that would normally anchor your upper teeth into the jaw. Once this new growth occurs, you can get dental implants that can be anchored into that new bone.

Who Needs a Sinus Lift?

If you want to know if you are a good candidate for a sinus lift, consider if any of these apply:

•  Have more than one missing tooth in the back part of your jaw.
•  Have a significant quantity of bone from the back of the jaw missing.
•  Have missing teeth from a condition or birth defect.
•  Have many maxillary teeth missing, as they would support and anchor your implants.

What Goes Into a Sinus Lift?

Usually, all that is needed is a small incision within the molar, or premolar, region, exposing the jawbone. Then, a tiny opening gets cut into your bone, allowing one of our oral surgeons to raise up the membrane that lines the sinus. Beneath that membrane, bone graft material is placed, and the incisions are sutured shut. The material used for the bone graft can be your own bone, bone from another source, or occasionally synthetic materials are used. Once several months have gone by and the bone has healed, that new bone can be the anchor point for dental implants.

There are times where our oral surgeons can do a sinus lift and implant abutment placement at the same time, when there is a good amount of bone but not quite as much as would be ideal. However, if only a bit of bone is available, the procedures will have to be done separately.

Thanks to the sinus graft, many people can now get implants where their only option used to be dentures that never fit right. This procedure, performed by Dr. Falk or Dr. Krieger in our office, typically only requires local anesthesia, but if you prefer, oral and intravenous sedation options are available.
