Inspire Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep, leading to multiple breathing pauses, often hundreds of times per night. It comes in three main types: obstructive, central, and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type, caused by a blocked upper airway during sleep. Central sleep apnea results from the brain's failure to signal breathing muscles properly. Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea. Patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea may be eligible for the Inspire Sleep Apnea treatment.
This implantable upper airway stimulation device, approved by the FDA, operates similarly to a pacemaker. Its purpose is to stabilize the throat during sleep, effectively preventing obstruction. Comprising three key components, the device includes a programmable neuro-stimulator situated in a chest pocket, a pressure sensing lead to monitor the patient's breathing, and a stimulator lead that administers gentle stimulation to the tongue nerve. Control of the stimulator is managed through a handheld remote control provided to the patient. Prior to bedtime, patients activate the device to softly stimulate throat muscles during sleep.
